Plan A Was Always Plan A

This morning, I was thinking about the course of my life, and how it's not even close to how I imagined it to be. At the end of my senior year of high school, I had created a five-year plan. In that plan, I would graduate from a dual B.S/M.D program in medicine, get married, have three children, own a house, and accomplish a host of other things. All. In. Five. Years. There's a saying that goes, "How can you make God laugh? Make a plan." (I truly believe God's plan is way better than ours -- a thousand times over.)

Looking back, I noticed that whenever I was about to enter a new phase of my life I had to let go of old thoughts, old habits, and old things in order to make room for new thoughts, new habits, and new things. Jesus discussed this way of thinking in the Bible. It's found in Mark 2:21-22. He discussed the importance of putting new wine into new bags (wine skins) less the old bags will burst, spilling the wine. If you don't let go of the past, the past will interfere with your present, and thus, affect your future.

Imagine holding onto a bag of really bad, worm-infested apples. You go through life holding this bag. Then, someone comes along and says, "Hey, I have a bag of fresh apples. You can have them." The only way you can receive the bag of fresh apples is to let go of the bag of bad apples. Imagine if you try to hold onto both bags. Carrying such a load is rather heavy. Many people go through life hunched-back, spiritually and physically. They hold onto the weight of past hurts, frustrations, and disappointments; the weight of failed relationships, unsuccessful endeavors, and unfulfilled promises. That kind of weight can cause anybody to slouch, get tired quickly, miss opportunities, etc. Eventually, the bad apples will infest the new apples due to their proximity.

I was working on an article the other day. I had to cut and paste, and copy and paste a few phrases from one part of the article to another. I became slightly frustrated when I couldn't cut and paste (or copy and paste) more than one different phrases from different parts of the document at a time. The previous phrase no longer existed once I copied the new phrase. (Maybe that's something Microsoft or a software company can consider working on... I will leave that up to them as I am not very tech-savvy! I am certain they already have such a feature, but I just don't know it yet!) So, as I was saying, life is a lot like "cut and paste" or "copy and paste." In order to copy or cut things, you need to let go of the old phrases (i.e. habits, thoughts, things, etc.) to make room for the new phrases. With the new phrases, you can create something beautiful in your life!
